M1 MacBook Pro Lost macOS but Kept Data: Recover the Files Before Any Erase
Do not erase the Mac or choose a DFU Restore while the files still matter. The message “there are no users on this volume to recover mac” does not by itself prove that the user-data volume is gone. Because macOS was intentionally removed while the data was meant to be preserved, the immediate goal is to regain a non-destructive path to Recovery and find out whether the data volume can still be unlocked.
That is the real blocker in this M1 MacBook Pro recovery case. The owner had already tried a bootable USB, an older Apple Configurator setup on a Monterey Mac, DFU Revive, and Recovery Mode. They explicitly rejected an erase because the local files had not been backed up.
Do Not Treat a Bootable USB as a Data-Recovery Bypass
An external macOS installation can boot on Apple silicon in supported configurations, but Apple explains that an external operating system must first be personalized through an authenticated restart from recoveryOS. If this Mac cannot get through the Recovery ownership/authentication path, an external USB install is not a shortcut around that problem.
Retry the Non-Erasing DFU Path Under Apple’s Current Requirements
The earlier DFU attempt does not match Apple’s current requirements. Apple now specifies a host Mac running macOS 14 or later, connected to the internet, plus a USB-C cable that supports both data and charging. The affected Mac should appear in a DFU window in Finder.
- Step 1
Use a second Mac on macOS 14 or later and follow Apple’s current DFU preparation instructions. Connect directly with the correct USB-C cable and place the M1 Mac in DFU mode.
- Step 2
Choose Revive Mac, not Restore. Apple states that Revive repairs firmware without erasing the Mac. If the host can only proceed to Restore, stop before confirming it: Apple states that Restore erases the Mac and returns it to factory settings.
- Step 3
If Revive brings macOS Recovery back, preserve the files before reinstalling or changing the disk. In Recovery, Apple’s Share Disk feature can expose an accessible volume to another Mac so you can copy data to separate storage.
If Recovery Returns but Some Files Are Still Missing
Only after the internal volume is readable and, when required, unlocked with valid credentials does software recovery become relevant. It is not a way to bypass an unavailable Recovery environment or locked encryption.
Stop Before Data Destruction:
If a current DFU Revive still cannot restore a usable Recovery environment, move to Apple service or a Mac board-level specialist with an explicit “data first, no erase” instruction. Do not approve DFU Restore, Erase Mac, or Disk Utility erase while the only local copy still matters.
