Can DaVinci Resolve or darktable Recover Files From a Lost SD Card?
Possibly, but only if something was copied or generated on the Mac before the SD card was lost. In this r/datastorage case, the physical SD card containing film-project photos and RAW files was missing, while DaVinci Resolve and darktable had been used on a 2023 MacBook Pro minutes earlier. Because the card itself is gone, normal SD card recovery software cannot scan the originals. The realistic path is to look for local copies and generated media.
Do Not Clear Anything Yet
Do not clear DaVinci Resolve cache, delete proxy media, reset darktable, run cleanup utilities, or remove the project/library database until you have checked and copied anything useful to a separate folder.
Check DaVinci Resolve for Proxy or Cache Media
Open the project and check whether the missing clips are offline. Then inspect the project's Working Folders for the proxy-generation and cache locations. If proxy media, optimized media, render cache, or exported clips exist, copy those folders somewhere safe before changing the project. Blackmagic Design exposes separate proxy and cache locations in Resolve project settings, so generated media may survive even when the camera card does not. Use the current Blackmagic Design support center if your Resolve version places these settings differently.
These files are not guaranteed to be camera originals. A proxy may be lower resolution or use a different codec, and render cache may contain only material that Resolve generated for the timeline. But if the immediate goal is to finish or reconstruct a project, usable proxies or cached renders can still be valuable.
Check How darktable Imported the Photos
darktable's official import documentation makes the key distinction. If you used copy & import, darktable copied the image files to the configured storage location, so full originals may still be on the Mac. If you used add to library, darktable only registered the files in its database and left the originals on the SD card.
Even in the second case, check darktable's local thumbnail cache before deleting anything. Its documentation confirms that thumbnails are cached on disk. A cached preview is not the missing RAW file, but it may preserve a viewable version of an otherwise unavailable photo.

- DaVinci proxy or generated media: usable video derivatives, but not necessarily original camera quality.
- darktable thumbnails: previews only, not replacement RAW files.
