Photos Recovered From a Dropped Hard Drive Have Black Areas: Can They Be Rebuilt?

Only if the missing or wrongly assembled original image data can still be obtained. Black areas and blurry sections in a recovered photo may mean the file was assembled from incomplete or incorrect fragments; a picture enhancer cannot verify or restore the lost original pixels.

In this post-lab photo recovery case, a Toshiba hard drive had been dropped and sent to ACE Data Recovery. The lab copied recovered raw image files to another drive, but some pictures contained black sections or blurring. The owner confirmed having both the damaged original and the delivered copy and asked how to rebuild the images from a Mac.

Find Out What the Lab Actually Recovered

The immediate question is not whether macOS has a suitable repair app. It is whether the complete bytes for each photo exist. Ask the lab whether it produced a sector-by-sector image, whether certain areas were unreadable, and whether the returned files came from filesystem records or raw file carving. Missing filesystem metadata can make fragments hard to associate; unreadable sectors may mean parts never reached the delivered file.

Choose the Next Action
  • Complete source image or better lab export exists: request re-extraction or specialist fragment analysis from that preserved source.
  • Only imperfect JPGs survived: examine original files, embedded thumbnails, and other copies; cosmetic reconstruction is not original-data recovery.
  • Original HDD was physically damaged: avoid powering it up for repeated consumer scans; ask the lab whether further controlled reads are safe.

When to Stop Trying Different Repair Tools

Preserve the received files and the lab's reports before testing anything on duplicates. A JPEG may open even when sections contain zeros, unrelated fragments, or incomplete compressed data. Recoverit’s guidance on incomplete recovered files similarly distinguishes finding a file from having intact content. If no more original sectors or valid fragments are available, restoration of the exact photographs is not guaranteed.
