Ricoh GR IV Photos Missing? Check Internal Storage and microSD First

If Ricoh GR IV photos appear to be missing, check the camera's internal memory and microSD card separately before attempting recovery. The GR IV has about 53 GB of built-in storage and a removable microSD slot. An empty card, an empty import window, or a camera that does not appear as a Mac disk does not by itself mean the photos were deleted. Stop shooting and do not format either storage location until you find out where the images were saved.

In this r/ricohGR discussion about accessing GR IV internal photos on a Mac, the owner could not find the camera as an external disk; another user said both Photos and Image Capture appeared empty. Those are genuine access problems, but neither report proves that the original photo files are gone.

Check the GR IV's Two Storage Locations

  1. Step 1

Check internal-memory playback. On the camera, open Playback Settings and use Playback Memory Selection to view the internal memory. Look for the missing dates and pictures.

  2. Step 2

Check microSD playback separately. Switch Playback Memory Selection to the memory card and inspect its images. Ricoh documents this selection in its official GR IV FAQ.

  3. Step 3

Check where the camera was set to record. The GR IV offers internal-memory and memory-card priority settings. It does not automatically save each shot to both locations, so inserting a microSD card does not establish that earlier photos were saved there. If you locate the originals, import them to another device before doing anything else.

If the Photos Are Visible on the Camera but Not Your Mac

Do not treat an absent Finder disk icon as a data-loss diagnosis. Ricoh's supported Mac workflow is to connect the camera using the USB-C cable, open Image Capture, select the RICOH GR device, and import the photos. If the import list looks empty, verify the chosen camera memory and connection before deleting or resetting anything.

If the camera still shows the pictures but USB import fails, the official GR WORLD app can access images on either camera storage location. The camera's Image Copy function can also copy intact internal-memory photos to a separate, healthy microSD card. Do not use a card that contains missing or deleted photos as the copy destination.

Another owner described GR IV images absent from the camera's playback view while the files remained visible through Mac Image Capture. A playback-view problem should be ruled out before assuming physical data loss.

If the Photos Were Deleted or the microSD Card Was Formatted

If the missing JPEG or DNG files were on the microSD card, stop using that card and remove it from the camera. If a computer can detect it reliably through a card reader, Recoverit Memory Card Recovery can scan for recoverable photos after deletion or formatting. Preview the results when available and save recovered files to a different drive, never to the affected microSD card. Recovery is not guaranteed, especially after overwriting.

If the card is not detected by a computer or repeatedly disconnects, stop repeated software scans and consider specialist recovery. Do not format, initialize, or run a repair operation on it first.

If the Only Copy Was in the 53 GB Internal Memory

If images are still visible in internal-memory playback, prioritize copying or importing those existing files. But if they were actually deleted from the camera's built-in memory, do not assume that removing a microSD card or connecting the GR IV through its photo-transfer interface gives recovery software raw access to that internal storage. No direct Recoverit scanning path for GR IV internal memory has been verified. Stop taking photos and contact Ricoh support or a qualified data-recovery specialist before attempting a reset or other storage-changing action.
