Samsung Tab A7 Lite Photos Became Unreadable on microSD, but a New Video Still Plays

If a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite can play a recent video from its microSD card but older photos moved there will not open, the working video does not prove the earlier picture files are intact. Do not format the card or move more files onto it. Check whether the original images still exist before trying to repair the unreadable copies.

In this Samsung tablet file-loss case on Reddit, the user transferred files from internal storage to a newly purchased SD card. About a month later, many images failed to open with a file-format error, while one more recently transferred video remained playable. The post does not confirm the card brand, whether the transfer used Move or Copy, or whether the failing JPG files still contain image data.

Look For Surviving Originals Before Scanning

In Samsung My Files, check both internal storage and the SD card for the exact photo filenames, then inspect My Files Trash, Gallery Trash and any previously enabled cloud backup or computer export. Samsung's My Files instructions distinguish Copy, which keeps the source, from Move, which removes the original after transferring it. Do not infer that the internal originals were erased without checking which action occurred.

What Does The Unsupported JPG Error Mean?

An unsupported-format message can mean the file is corrupt or incomplete, not merely that the tablet lacks a JPEG decoder. If the card is stable, copy a few affected files to another drive and examine the copies: verify their actual sizes, whether they open on a computer, and whether their contents look like plausible image data rather than empty or zero-filled placeholders. Do not edit or rename the only source files while testing.

Choose The Safe Recovery Path
  • Originals still exist internally, in Trash, or in backup: Save and verify those intact copies first.
  • The card is detected at its expected capacity and remains stable: Make a byte-level image before repeated recovery attempts. Search for alternative intact versions on that image, and save everything to another healthy drive.
  • Copied JPGs have no meaningful image payload: A file-level repair cannot recreate data that is not there. Scanning for another surviving copy is more useful than repeatedly repairing the same placeholder.
  • The card intermittently disconnects, overheats, or reports an implausible capacity: Stop DIY scanning and preserve it for specialist evaluation.

If normal copies are gone and the card remains readable, Recoverit Memory Card Recovery can be considered for missing or logically damaged files. It is not a guarantee that the original photo data survived the earlier transfer. Keep the latest playable video and every recovered file on separate healthy storage.
