SSD Becomes RAW and Recovery Tools Show No Files: Verify Physical Readability First

Do not format the SSD just because Windows labels a partition RAW. A RAW label means Windows cannot currently interpret that volume as a mountable file system; it does not establish that every data sector is blank. But if recovery tools also cannot read meaningful data, the next decision is whether the physical SSD is exposing readable sectors, not which fourth scanner to buy.

In this non-booting SSD case on Reddit, TestDisk, DMDE and PhotoRec had already failed to show the user's files. The person wanted to inspect the filenames before losing them in a reformat. The post did not give the model, actual disk capacity in Disk Management, health values, or whether those programs were pointed at the full physical disk.

Is RAW the Same as an Unreadable SSD?

No. A damaged partition or file-system record may prevent Windows from mounting a volume even while the SSD itself is readable. A recovery program can sometimes read below that volume layer. On the other hand, if the device identifies with the wrong capacity or returns persistent I/O errors, normal file-system scans may fail because the underlying disk is not accessible.

Record the SSD model and capacity from Windows Disk Management or a trusted read-only diagnostic environment. Check whether the complete physical disk, rather than only the RAW volume, is visible to a recovery tool. Do not write a new partition table, run CHKDSK or use the repair/format prompt to make the system boot.

What Is the Last Safe Recovery Decision?

Decide from Readability
  • Normal capacity, stable reads: Preserve a complete image to a different healthy drive if storage and skill permit, then inspect its partition records and search from the image. GNU ddrescue describes imaging with a progress mapfile.
  • Readable image but damaged file system: A file-recovery tool may still find records or file signatures. Recoverit Hard Drive Recovery is applicable only when the storage or image is readable; it cannot manufacture missing blocks.
  • Incorrect capacity, repeated I/O failures, or no readable sectors: Stop repeated scans and request a specialist SSD assessment before powering the device through more tests.

The report gives no basis for a recovery percentage or a definitive TRIM diagnosis. Identifying the SSD's physical access state is more useful than assuming that RAW automatically requires formatting.
