Deleted Audio Stems and Stock Sounds: What Should You Recover vs Redownload?
Do not spend recovery time on files you can replace cleanly. In this r/ableton case, missing project media included both stems and stock sounds. The right response is to separate unique local audio from reinstallable library content.
Redownload Stock Content; Protect Unique Stems
Ableton’s reinstallation guidance explains that the application and standard content can be installed again, while custom user content must be protected separately. The same logic applies to video-project SFX libraries: use a vendor/account copy when one exists, but treat custom recordings, mixes, and exported stems as irreplaceable.
Recovery Priority
- Factory packs, purchased stock SFX, vendor loops: redownload/reinstall first.
- Custom WAV/AIFF stems, field recordings, edited SFX: stop writing to the source storage if they are truly deleted.
- Project opens but media is offline: restore/relink the files before assuming the project itself needs recovery.
Recover Only the Unique Local Files
If custom stems or SFX were deleted from stable, readable storage, Recoverit File Recovery can scan for recoverable copies and save them elsewhere. Recovered audio still does not recreate DAW/NLE edits that existed only in the project file.
