CHKDSK Moved GoPro Clips Into FOUND.000: Can the Videos Be Recovered?

If a GoPro SD card shows FOUND.000 and .CHK files after Windows Scan and Fix, do not run CHKDSK again. The repair may have changed directory links, but some original photo or video data may still be recoverable from the card or an image.

In this r/datarecovery GoPro CHK-file report, a crash and unsafe removal preceded Windows repair. The poster created an image, compared tools, and reported that most files were recovered while some MP4 results remained unplayable.

Preserve the Remaining Evidence

Keep the original card out of use and make a verified byte-level copy if it remains stable and one does not already exist. Preserve the FOUND.000 folder separately too; CHK fragments should not be deleted or blindly renamed in place.

Microsoft explains that CHKDSK can save lost allocation chains as .CHK files. That process is not the same as restoring original names, paths, and full video sequences.

Test Recovered Footage, Not Just File Counts

Work from a stable image or separate copy and compare available file-system reconstruction and signature recovery results. Original filenames or correct-looking previews are useful clues, but an MP4 may still be fragmented or incomplete.

Export selected clips to a separate healthy disk, open and play their full duration, and compare them with the camera originals or backups if any survive. A readable card can also be evaluated using Recoverit Memory Card Recovery, but no scan can guarantee the missing portions of damaged clips.
