Microsoft Says a Nonprofit Tenant Lost Data Early: Check SharePoint and Local Files
If Microsoft cannot restore deleted tenant data, a desktop recovery program cannot retrieve files from Microsoft's SharePoint or OneDrive servers. The remaining practical question is whether the organization still has complete independent exports or files previously downloaded to its own computers, not merely cloud placeholders.
In this Microsoft 365 nonprofit data-loss case on Reddit, the organization shared a Microsoft notification describing a Business Premium grant's end and an error that deleted remaining data, if any, before the normal retention/export period. Microsoft also said it could not identify exactly which files were affected. The OP separately stated that the organization had moved to the donated Business Basic offering and had no independent backup.
What Should the Tenant Administrator Verify?
Keep the notification, case number and written record of the licensing migration. Ask Microsoft 365 support to confirm the tenant ID, affected SharePoint sites, OneDrive users, subscription state, retention status and any available organizational export or restoration path. Do not assume that buying a new license will recreate content Microsoft has already confirmed unavailable. The Microsoft 365 subscription-lifecycle documentation describes access, disabled periods and possible data deletion, but it does not establish whether this particular tenant still has recoverable cloud content.
Could the OneDrive Folders on a PC Contain the Files?
Local-Copy Check
- Full files are already present and open offline: Copy them immediately to an independent destination outside OneDrive. Also check former staff computers, external drives, email attachments and exported archives.
- Files show only cloud icons and cannot open offline: Those entries may be Files On-Demand placeholders, not locally recoverable document content. Microsoft explains the online-only versus downloaded distinction.
- A full local document was deleted from a healthy PC: Stop writes to its original drive. Conditional local deleted-file recovery may be possible, although SSD TRIM and continued use can prevent it. Recoverit File Recovery is limited to readable local storage; it is not a tenant-server restoration tool.
The owner should not treat the cloud incident, licensing dispute and locally deleted files as one recoverable disk event. Preserve the evidence and any existing offline copies first.
