Snapped SD Card With a Broken NAND Chip: Is Any Data Still Recoverable?

Possibly, but this is now a specialist flash-recovery case, not something recovery software can solve. In this r/datarecovery case, a laptop fell onto a full-size SD card while it was inserted in the reader and snapped the card and PCB in half. The OP later confirmed that one memory package had physically lost a piece, while the card contained important first-birthday photos.

Do Not Power or Repair It at Home

Do not keep inserting the broken card, bend the PCB back together, heat the chips, or transplant them onto a donor board. With visible NAND-package damage, additional mechanical or thermal stress can reduce whatever recovery chance remains.

Can the Intact NAND Chip Be Recovered by Itself?

Do not assume so. ACE Lab's PC-3000 Flash documentation explains that flash devices contain a controller and one or more NAND memory chips, and that the controller transforms and mixes data before writing it to flash. In multi-chip recovery, the raw NAND contents may need to be reordered, de-interleaved, error-corrected, and passed through a reconstructed translator before normal files appear.

That means the card is not literally a RAID 0 array, but the practical effect can be similar: complete photo data may be distributed across more than one physical memory component. ACE Lab's multi-chip recovery examples show that separate dumps often have to be joined and de-interleaved before the original file system can be rebuilt. An intact chip therefore does not automatically equal an intact group of photos.

What Does the Broken NAND Package Mean for the Chances?

The key question is whether the fracture damaged only the package and connections or reached the NAND silicon inside. If the silicon and critical connections remain readable, a specialist may still obtain useful data through direct NAND access. If part of the memory die itself is physically destroyed, the data stored in that damaged area may be permanently unreadable, and files that depended on it may be incomplete even if the other chip can be read.

Best Next Decision
  • The birthday photos justify professional recovery: contact a lab that specifically performs NAND/flash chip-off recovery and multi-chip image reconstruction, not one that only runs desktop recovery software.
  • The lab says it can read only the intact chip: ask whether it can reconstruct this exact controller/NAND layout with the damaged package missing. Reading one chip is not the same as rebuilding usable files.
  • The cost is too high right now: keep every broken piece together, store the card flat and dry, and stop handling it so a later specialist evaluation remains possible.

For this Reddit case, the useful answer is therefore not “try another recovery program.” The card needs a flash specialist to determine whether both NAND packages can be read well enough to reconstruct the controller's original data layout. With one package visibly missing material, recovery may still be worth an evaluation, but it cannot be promised.
