SD Card Reader Corrupted Wedding Photos: What Should You Do Next?

In this r/WeddingPhotography recovery case, the photographer said the same reader was used before both the main card and backup card appeared corrupted, and Disk Drill then returned photos that looked blurry. Do not assume those blurry files prove the original wedding photos are ruined. First determine whether the cards themselves are damaged, whether the reader produced bad transfers, or whether the recovered files are only previews.
Protect Both Cards
Stop using the suspect reader. Do not shoot on either card, format them, run repair tools, or save recovered files back to them. Treat the main and backup cards as two separate recovery sources.
Check the Cards With a Different Reader Before Recovering Again
Use one known-good reader and test each card separately. If a card mounts normally and the original files open, copy the important files immediately and then preserve a byte-to-byte image before doing more troubleshooting. If the card is readable but files fail to open, create an image first and run recovery against the image rather than repeatedly scanning the original card. A byte-to-byte backup gives you a stable copy for repeated recovery attempts without adding more reads to the source.
Blurry Recovered Photos May Not Be the Full RAW Files
If these were RAW photos, check the recovered file extensions and open them in a RAW-capable application before deciding they are unusable. Adobe explains that RAW workflows can display JPEG previews that are separate from the underlying RAW sensor data; a preview can therefore look different from the full image data. Choose the Next Path
- A second reader opens the originals: copy them off immediately and retire the suspect reader. Do not keep experimenting with the cards.
- The cards are stable but the originals will not open: image each card separately, then scan the images. Compare recovered file size and type with what the camera normally creates instead of judging only by thumbnails.
- Either card disconnects, reports the wrong capacity, or cannot be imaged reliably: stop repeated DIY scans. For wedding work that cannot be reshot, a professional data-recovery lab is the safer next step.
The immediate goal is not to sharpen the blurry Disk Drill results. It is to find out whether those files are merely previews or partial recoveries while preserving the two original cards for a better recovery attempt.
