Phone SD Card Settings Formatted the Wrong Storage Twice: Rescue Files Safely
Leave the removed microSD out of the phone and do not format it again. A second format reduces recovery prospects, but it does not prove that all old file bytes were erased. Recovery is most realistic if this was an ordinary portable microSD and the card has not been written to since the mistake.
In this wrong-storage formatting case from Reddit, the owner connected a USB-C stick containing Windows installation files and chose a format action in the phone's SD-card settings. The USB stick's contents were unchanged. After repeating the action, the owner discovered that the phone microSD had been formatted twice and removed it. The storage mode and exact formatting implementation were not specified.
First Distinguish Portable microSD From Adopted Internal Storage
Storage Mode Matters
- Portable SD card: If a trustworthy card reader detects the card at the correct capacity with stable reads, make a complete byte-to-byte image to another disk. Then scan the image or card read-only and save recovered data to a separate destination.
- Adopted internal storage: The card may have been encrypted with keys associated with that phone. If formatting invalidated its encryption context, a PC scanner cannot bypass the missing keys. Android adoptable-storage documentation explains the device-linked encryption.
- Wrong capacity or repeated disconnects: Stop repeated scanning. Seek a card specialist if the original data is valuable.
A tool such as Recoverit Memory Card Recovery can scan a readable, non-encrypted portable card for surviving files; it cannot reverse overwrite, restore missing adopted-storage keys or promise results after two formats.
What Can Be Verified Before Reusing the Card?
Open representative recovered originals in their correct apps and check their full content, not just file names or previews. Do not put restored files back on the formatted microSD. The OTG USB stick and microSD are two different devices: any further USB preparation should happen only after confirming the intended physical target and completing recovery.
