A Power Outage Left an HDD RAW: Can You Restore Files Without Formatting?
When a recovery tool can list files on a RAW or unallocated HDD, the safest goal is to copy those files to separate storage, not to make the original partition mountable. A missing destination drive is a storage-planning problem, not a reason to repair in place.
In this r/datarecovery RAW-drive case, power outages preceded an unallocated/RAW state, but GetDataBack could still enumerate files. The owner specifically lacked a second drive with enough room.
Preserve What Still Reads
Do not accept Windows formatting, create a new partition, change MBR/GPT layout again, or attempt CHKDSK repairs. Microsoft documents that CHKDSK repair parameters change file-system structures; they are not a substitute for extracting missing files.
Because power events can coincide with disk failure, confirm that the physical device reports its expected capacity and reads consistently. New read errors, disappearing capacity, or disconnections are reasons to stop scanning and seek an imaging or professional path.
Choose an Actual Destination Before Recovery
If the source is stable and the tool can preview complete files, recover the most important selections to a healthy drive with sufficient free space. You do not necessarily need another disk matching total capacity for a selective file export, but the output must fit safely.
If the source is unstable, first preserve it using a properly planned disk image or qualified lab; GNU ddrescue documents resumable imaging to another device or image file. A recovery application, including Recoverit Data Recovery, is relevant only to readable source data or a supported copy, never as a repair-in-place shortcut.
