If you have some important data stored on a DVD RW disc and don’t want anyone laying eyes on it then you need to erase the data from DVD. However, simply deleting the data from the disc would have the same effect that deleting a file from the hard drive has. The data stored won’t be erased and only the sectors which are occupied by the data will be labeled as free for the operating system to use. You need to erase the DVD RW disc, erasing the data from the DVD RW disc also becomes necessary if you want to recycle it and use it for storing something else.

Part 1: How to Erase Files on a DVD-RW

There are two separate ways in which you can use Windows for erasing the data from DVD RW discs.

1. Erase Individual Files

  1. Open Windows Explorer by pressing Windows and E keys together.
  2. Find the files which are to be erased from the appropriate folder in the DVD burner menu which houses your DVD RW disc. The DVD burner menu can be accessed by double-clicking the DVD burner icon.
  3. Select multiple files for deletion at once by clicking them while holding the Ctrl key.
  4. Confirm the deletion of the files by clicking ‘Yes’ after pressing the Delete key.

2. Erase Entire Disc

  1. Open Windows Explorer by pressing Windows and E keys together.
  2. Find the driver letter for your DVD burner and click it.
  3. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen after clicking the option on the toolbar labeled Erase This Disc.

Part 2: How to Securely Erase DVD-RW Disc

The abovementioned methods can be used to delete data from DVD RW disc with consummate ease. However, it won’t be able to erase it securely. The task of erasing data from these discs needs to be performed by a third-party data erasure tool. There are various such tools available on the internet but not all of them are as effective in permanently removing data from a DVD RW disc. Stellar BitRaser for File is among a handful of data erasers available online which can securely erase DVD RW disc.

Stellar BitRaser for File is considered to be a trustworthy data erasure tool. The wide range of features that it possesses is the reason for this.

  2. It will take for a while, and you can reboot your system.

Stellar BitRaser for File is more than capable of removing data from DVD RW disc in a single pass. However, if you think it isn’t possible then you can take a couple of extra passes. This will confirm beyond any doubt that the data has been securely erased from the DVD RW disc and can’t be recovered by any means.

Simply put, DVD RW discs offer a flexible method of storing data. Since they can be rewritten, you can write data on them more than once and because of their portable nature can take them anywhere you want. However, if you have to erase some data from these discs then you need to erase the DVD RW disc to ensure its permanent deletion. You can either use Windows Explore for this purpose or make use of a third-party data erasure tool like Stellar BitRaser for File. The latter option is more suitable as it can perform the data erasure in a much safer manner.
