How to Fix Bad System Config Info Error in Windows 11/10

Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) errors like the BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO may arise at Windows startup, and without context. If you have encountered this issue, you are not the only one. Usually, the computer restarts on its own after it flashes the BSoD.

The Bad System Config Info error is a BSoD that arises from a Boot configuration file issue. There are instances when the older files conflict with the stable or newer files. It may also be caused by a bug in the system Registry.

If you get this stop code, you will need to follow a few different methods to resolve this problem. However, most of these solutions can only be done if the PC can reboot. If not, you can try restarting in Safe Mode before following the steps.

Solution 1. Update Windows and all your drivers

Keep your PC up-to-date to avoid BSoD errors such as BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO.

  • Proceed to Settings, and then select Updates & Security.

  • Windows 11/10 will check and install the updates automatically.
  • To update drivers manually, open Device Manager, and expand on the drive you wish to update.
  • Right-click on the drive and choose Update Driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. Otherwise, click Browse my computer for driver software if you have the driver installed on your PC.

Solution 2. Fix Windows Registry Files

  • To do this, you need the Windows 11/10 installation files and save on an external device. Insert the device and restart the PC to boot it from the disk. Click Next.

  • In the command prompt window, type in these commands one by one:

ren C:\\Windows\System32\config\SECURITY SECURITY.old
ren C:\\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE SOFTWARE.old
ren C:\\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM SYSTEM.old
Hit Enter after each line.
  • Type these commands one by one and press Enter after each line.

copy C:\\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\DEFAULT C:\\Windows\System32\config\
copy C:\\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SAM C:\\Windows\System32\config\
copy C:\\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SECURITY ren C:\\Windows\System32\config\
copy C:\\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SYSTEM C:\\Windows\System32\config\
copy C:\\Windows\System32\config\RegBack\SOFTWARE C:\\Windows\System32\config\
  • Close the window and restart PC.

Solution 3. Fix the BCD files

  • As in Solution 2, restart PC to boot it from the disk. Click Next.
  • Choose to Repair your computer.
  • Select Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, and then Command Prompt.
  • Type these commands in sequence on the command prompt window:

bootrec /repairbcd

bootrec /osscan

bootrec /repairmbr

Hit Enter after each one.
  • Close the window and restart the PC.

Solution 4. Use Windows Memory Diagnostics to check issues with RAM

  • Type memory in the search bar and click on Windows Memory Diagnostic.
  • The computer will restart and boot to the Windows Memory Diagnostic window. It will automatically run the test.
