Part 4. Tips for DSLR Camera Maintenance

The set of simple tips that anyone can use to clean and maintain the appearance and function of the camera are as follows:

Clean the Body

Cleaning of DSLR requires a similar follow-up as for other cameras. Take a dry and soft cloth and clean the camera body to make it free of any regime, finger marks or dust. For persistent stain, slightly damp down the cloth using distilled water.

Clean the Lens

Take a small blower bulb and soft brush for sand and dust removal. It is an important step. Do not skip. After removing sand and dust, take a soft cloth and wipe the camera lens in a circular motion starting from the middle point. Make sure to clean both front and back elements of the lens.

Clean the Lens Mount

In order to keep the lens of DSLR camera mount and allow the working of electrical contacts, keep the area of the lens dry and grime-free with a microfiber cloth.

Clean the Mirror and Screen

As the DSLR camera has a mirror mechanism inside it for exposing to the elements every time the lens is changed. You need to have a look at it while removing the lens and look inside just below the mirror where the focusing screen is located.

You need to take a clean brush free of dirt and clean the lens and focusing screen ensuring to not let dirt set inside the camera. This is because these components require great care as they are delicate.

Clean the Image Sensor

The appearance of blurry spots on the image is due to the dust in the image sensor of the camera. Thus, it is important to keep it clean. DSLR cameras often has built-in sensor cleaning systems i.e. a fast sensor vibration. Therefore, for such types of cameras, you don’t even need to use a swab or a soft brush or neither buy a cleaning kit of the image sensor.

What you need to do is to only maintain the image sensor and the mirror in all situations, i.e. you must place the mount cover of the lens over the lens mount while working.

Clean the LCD Screen

However, there might be differences in the size of cameras but the process of cleaning the LCD screen in any camera is just the same. Use the microfiber cloth to clean the LCD screen and avoid using any liquid cleaners, this might damage the lens. Clean the LCD screen with quite gentle moments of your hands. Use as little pressure as possible.

Things to avoid

The following methods may prove helpful but you must remember these instructions as well.

  1. Never use canned air to clean any piece of the DSLR camera. The air pressure is excessively incredible and could even drive residue or sand into the camera body, harming its internal parts.
  2. If you have to utilize fluid to clean the camera, consistently damp down the material a little, and afterward clean the camera. Never place the fluid legitimately on the camera.
  3. Never use liquor, acetone, or different solvents on any part of the camera. They're excessively unforgiving and can cause harm.
  4. Never use a paper towel, tissue, or paper-based items to clean your camera. They "shed" filaments and flotsam and jetsam and will scratch fragile surfaces.
