Part 2: Computer is on but screen is black. How to Fix It?

Regardless of the reasons why your computer’s screen is black, the following are some of the most effective solutions you can try;

Method 1: Test your Monitor

Video errors can cause the computer’s screen to turn black. When there is no video output, the computer’s screen will appear black. It is also possible that your computer is experiencing a blue screen of death, but because of the video and monitor errors, you may not be able to see it.

If you recently changed or upgraded the monitor, you may want to check of the new connection can handle the resolution. Some HDMI and DVI versions can only handle resolutions above 1080p.

Method 2: Restart Your Computer

This solution will be particularly effective if the problem is caused by a software issue. The only way to restart a Windows 10 computer with a black screen is to forcibly shutdown the PC. To do this simply press and hold the power button on the computer until it shuts down. Wait a few seconds and then press the power button again to turn the computer on again.

Method 3: Check Power Supply

You may also want to make sure that your computer didn’t run out of power. If it is a desktop, you should ensure that all components including the monitor, keyboard and mouse have a steady power supply. When the PC is not getting sufficient power, the monitor can go black even if the computer is turned on. Check that the computer is also not in power saving mode as this can also cause the monitor to go back depending on the power saving mode settings that you’ve set up.

Method 4: Perform a Hard Reset

If the problem keeps happening even after you have tried all the solutions above, you may want to perform a hard reset to fix the problem. A hard reset is a solution that is a little bit extreme, but can be highly effective when the computer is facing problems like this one. Before hard resetting the PC, make sure you backup all the data on it to avoid data loss.

Now, follow these simple steps to hard reset your Windows 10 PC;

Step 1: Click on the Start menu on your computer and then click on the gear icon, just above the power icon to access the device’s settings.

Method 5: Clear the BIOS Memory

Clearing the computer’s Basic Input Output System (BIOS) is one way to repair the computer’s power system and may therefore fix this issue. To do this, follow these simple steps;

Step 1: Power off the computer if it is not already off. Turn it back on and then press the “F2” or “Delete" key to enter the BIOS setup. (The exact key you have to enter will depend on your computer’s manufacturer.)

Step 2: Find the option marked “Setup Defaults” or “Default Values” depending on the manufacturer. Press the enter key to select the option and confirm that you would like to reset the BIOS settings.

Step 3: Press “F10” to reboot the computer. You can launch the BIOS configuration again to confirm that the values were reset.

Method 6: Check Hardware

This issue can also indicate problems with one or more hardware components on your computer. It may therefore be important to check the computer’s hardware components to ensure they are working correctly.

The best way to do this is to start the PC with only the essential hardware. Remove all non-essential hardware components and then turning on the PC. If the PC restarts with just the essential hardware components but the display still won’t work, reinstall each piece of hardware, testing after each installation. By installing each piece of hardware on its own and testing it, you can easily determine which hardware component is not working correctly and have it fixed or replace it.

If the computer doesn’t power on even with only the essential hardware components, you can use a Power on Self-Test Card (POST). A POST can help you determine the hardware components that may be preventing your computer from turning on completely.
